How I Use AI as a Homeschool Mom (and Just a Mom!)

Yup, artificial intelligence! Not in a scary, robot-overlord kind of way. More like:
“Hey ChatGPT, help me make a lesson plan about Newton’s Laws… but make it fun, please.”
Let’s dive into the ways I use AI daily as a mom and homeschooler!
🎓 Homeschooling + AI = Magic
We’ve been homeschooling for just over a year now—and honestly, it’s been the best decision for our family. But homeschooling is a lot! Planning lessons, keeping things fresh, adjusting to each child’s learning style… that’s where AI comes in.
Here’s how I’ve used it:
Custom Lesson Plans with Personality
For example, I asked ChatGPT to create a lesson plan on Newton’s Laws—specifically for my 8-year-old son, who loves Legos and Minecraft. I wanted it to be interactive, experiment-based, and kid-led.
It delivered! The plan included fun facts, simple experiments using Hot Wheels cars, and even fill-in-the-blank worksheets. Total game changer.
🧠 AI for Creativity & Problem-Solving
One of my favorite stories:
My daughter Savannah watched a show she loved but couldn’t remember the name—or even the platform. All she had were a few scattered details: a volcano, a girl in a certain color shirt, and a goddess.
I plugged the details into ChatGPT, and after a couple of back-and-forths—it FOUND IT. She was thrilled, and honestly, I never would’ve found it on my own.
🎒 On-the-Go Learning with Epcot + AI
On a recent trip to Epcot, we decided to make it an educational adventure. I used ChatGPT to pull up fun facts about each country we visited. Then, on the drive home, I had it write and read aloud a short story where Savannah and Sammy were the main characters traveling through those countries using the facts we’d learned.
It turned an ordinary outing into an engaging, memorable learning experience.
🎶 Music Made for Our Family
I also use Suno AI for music creation. I pay $10/month to get commercial rights and private access, and it’s been incredible.
Some songs I’ve created using AI:
- Wake-up songs for the kids
- Math songs to make learning easier
- Clean-up songs for chore time
- Study playlists that are completely customized
I write lyrics with ChatGPT, pop them into Suno, and voila—music that’s fun, safe, and personalized.
🎨 Visual Fun with Midjourney
Midjourney is my go-to for AI-generated images. It’s great for sparking creativity, especially for my artsy daughter. She can describe her wildest ideas—like “bunnies in clouds with rainbows”—and see them brought to life.
My son (who’s not so into drawing) loves it too. He dreams up mashups like “Shark Mario” or Minecraft creatures, and Midjourney lets him be creative without the pressure of drawing it all himself.
🍽 AI Helps Me Cook, Too!
When I was stuck in a recipe rut, I turned to ChatGPT. I told it:
- I have picky eaters
- These are the foods we like/don’t like
- I want easy, basic recipes
It gave me a list with ingredients, steps, and even suggestions to modify based on my family’s feedback. Bonus: I kept the conversation in one chat so I could ask for a combined grocery list. Time = saved. Sanity = preserved.
🚗 AI for Travel, Cars & More
From planning travel itineraries to restaurant hunting and even researching cars, I use AI all the time.
Currently, I’m using it to help me find a safe, budget-friendly car that meets all our criteria. I asked for deep research and it delivered a list of top options—saving me hours of scrolling.
💬 Final Thoughts
I get it—AI isn’t perfect. It can be wrong sometimes. But you know what? So are textbooks. I remember teachers correcting printed books all the time growing up.
As long as you fact-check and use it wisely, AI is an incredible tool. It doesn’t replace human creativity—it supports it.
